Arran for Families
Planning a family trip to the Isle of Arran? You’re in for a treat! Often called "Scotland in Miniature," Arran is packed with fun activities, stunning scenery and plenty of adventures that will keep the wee ones entertained (and hopefully tire them out). Whether your kids are intrepid explorers or budding nature enthusiasts, this island has something to delight everyone.
1. Explore Brodick Castle and gardens
Brodick Castle is a fantastic day out for the whole family. Inside, you can explore turrets, secret passages and period furniture and painting. Outside, wander through the formal gardens or walk the woodland trails. And if the kids get a bit bored, how about letting them run free in the Isle Be Wild adventure playground. There are two separate areas: one for toddlers and young children, and one for older children, with rope swings, wooden bridges, towers and zip wires.
2. Climb Goat Fell
Well, possibly not all the way to the top. Goat Fell, Arran’s iconic mountain, might seem daunting, but the lower trails are perfect for family walks. Pack a picnic and let the kids scramble over rocks, spot wildlife and take in breathtaking views.
3. Spend a day at the beach
Arran has several beaches dotted along the coastline, each with its own distinct charm. On Arran’s southern tip, Kildonan Beach is renowned for its stunning views of Pladda Island and the iconic Ailsa Craig. This beach is a haven for wildlife watchers - keep an eye out for seals basking on the rocks and seabirds soaring overhead.
Blackwaterfoot, on the island’s western coast, offers a charming mix of sandy shores and rugged cliffs. Popular for its sunsets, this beach is a photographer's dream. It’s also close to the King’s Cave, a historic site linked to the legend of Robert the Bruce and the spider.
Nestled near the island’s main village, Brodick Bay is a favourite among locals and visitors. With its golden sands and stunning views of Goat Fell, Arran’s highest peak, this beach is perfect for family picnics, gentle strolls, or even a quick paddle. Brodick Bay’s proximity to shops and cafes also makes it a convenient destination.
4. Visit the Arran Heritage Museum
Looking for an educational (but fun!) pitstop? The Isle of Arran Heritage Museum in Brodick offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history, complete with artifacts, traditional crafts, and even a reconstructed croft house. Kids will love imagining what life was like on Arran long ago.
5. Arran boat trip
Lamlash Cruises offer a range of boat trips to different destinations. Take a RIB tour of Brodick Bay, a cruise around Holy Isle, or a longer excursion to Holy Isle, where you can spend a few hours walking the coastal paths or exploring the lighthouse.
6. Wildlife spotting
Did you know that Arran hosts all of Scotland's 'Big Five' species of wildlife? Wherever you are on the island, keep your eyes peeled for red deer, otters, red squirrels, seals, or even a golden eagle if you’re lucky. Glen Rosa is particularly family-friendly, with its gently winding paths and stunning views.
7. Horse riding or pony trekking
What better way to explore the island than on horseback. Several stables across the island offer guided horse and pony rides for beginners and more experienced riders alike. The routes are carefully chosen across hills, beaches and private farm tracks.
8. Lochrazna Distillery
We may be a whisky distillery, but we are delighted to welcome younger guests to Lochranza. As well as adults, children aged between 8-17 can join our guided Distillery Tour, and learn about the processes involved in producing our award-winning Arran Single Malt.
You can also enjoy a nice browse in our fully stocked gift shop. It is hands down the best place to find our full range of Single Malts and giftware. As well as our full range of whiskies, our shop stocks a beautiful range of handcrafted gifts from all over Scotland and the UK, as well as the island. We also have a range of gifts suitable for children.
And if you're in need of refreshments, our CASKS Cafe is child friendly with full changing facilities and high chairs for children. We have a delicious children's menu featuring some of our best island produce - from locally grown salad leaves to island produced cheese, ham and locally baked bread. Our Arran Butcher burgers are legendary and a firm favourite with the whole family. There's always room for treats at the end of your meal with brownies, scones, homemade cake and a variety of delicious coffees, teas and hot chocolates - including our Arran Gold latte and hot chocolate!
